Keeping birds well in the Maltese climate
Shade before anything else
An aviary that catches the afternoon sun in July is dangerous. Shade cloth on the west side and good airflow do more than any supplement.
Seed goes off in the humidity
Buy what you'll use in a few weeks and keep it in a sealed tub. Damp seed moulds fast in a Maltese summer.
Red mite season
Mites explode from May to September. Check perches and nest pans at night and treat the cage, not only the bird.
Breeding starts early here
Our mild winters bring birds into condition sooner than the books say. Have nest pans and egg food ready by February.
