Malta’s seasonal planting guide

Autumn (September – November)

A key planting season in Malta. Sow lettuce, broad beans, peas, cauliflower and coriander as conditions cool. Divide suitable perennials while the soil remains warm.

Winter (December – February)

Review citrus feeding needs and prune roses and vines at the appropriate time. Check pot drainage after rain: waterlogged roots are a particular concern in Maltese winters.

Spring (March – May)

Plant tomatoes, peppers, melons and basil as temperatures become suitable. Establish a feeding routine that follows each plant’s needs and the fertiliser instructions.

Summer (June – August)

Water thoroughly in the early morning or evening, checking soil moisture first. Mulch pots and give heat-sensitive plants protection from strong afternoon sun.
