Keeping small pets well in the Maltese climate
Heat is the real danger
Rabbits and guinea pigs suffer above 26 °C. Keep them indoors or in deep shade from June to September, with a frozen bottle wrapped in a towel to lie against.
Hay is the main meal
Unlimited hay keeps teeth and guts working. Pellets are a side dish, roughly an eggcup a day for a rabbit — not a full bowl.
Flies in summer
Flystrike is a real risk here. Check the back end daily in hot weather, keep the hutch dry, and ask us about repellents.
Vitamin C for guinea pigs
They can't make their own. Fresh pepper and parsley plus a guinea-pig-specific pellet cover it; rabbit food does not.
